Rangitahuahua te tupuna whare

Rangitahuahua te moutere

Usually Tupuna Whare are named after an ancestor, but the name of the old Tupuna Whare (after which this one is also named) was taken from the island 'Rangitahuahua' where the Kurahaupo waka took refuge after becoming wrecked by a storm while on its journey from Hawaiiki to Aotearoa. Rangitahuatahua is more commonly known as Sunday Island, which is located in the Kermadec Islands.

Rangitahuahua II was officially opened by Matiu Rata, Leader of Mana Motuhake on 31 August 1985. Puhi: Carmel Wilson. Tai Te Kawa performed by Ruka Broughton and the opening honoured with the presence of the toki "Te Awhiorangi".
